Launch and spacecraft re-entry effects onthe atmosphere are known gaps to fulfil these requirements. This results in significant uncertainty andsystematic exclusion of such effects when developing materials on the basis of sustainable performance.Previous and ongoing Discovery activities, Insights into the Chemistry of Atmospheric Re-entry of JunkedSpacecraft (ICARUS) and Impacts of space Debris ablation on Earth's Atmospheric System (IDEAS), havehighlighted the potential importance of ablation products in the atmosphere while established initial modellingapproaches and experimental validation capabilities. The proposed activity addresses this critical knowledge gap by developing a consolidated experimental andmodelling framework to characterise emissionsfrom spacecraft re-entry and integrate these into atmosphericand design assessment tools. This will enable the incorporation of atmospheric impacts into Life CycleAssessment (LCA) and support both Ecodesign and Design-for-Demise (D4D) decision making. Such aframework would be the first worldwide. The activity encompasses the following tasks:- Identify representative launcher and spacecraftdemise-critical materials as well as Space Debris Particles(SPSs)- Propose material characterization factors (e.g. Ozon Depletionmetrics, radiative forcing proxies) andassociated quantification methodology- Refine methods to allow observation and characterization of particles generated during the vaporizationphase of selected materials- Demonstrate validation tests under realistic atmospheric re-entry conditions (e.g. Thermal, pressure andflow conditions) measuring and linking ablation fluxes to downstream chemical compositions- Parametrization and modelling of datasets for integration into re-entry and atmospheric chemistryclimatemodels-Define uncertainty and applicability ranges for model use- Formulate recommendations for standardised testing procedures to support the continuous developmentand population of material datasets.Procurement Policy: C(3) = Activity restricted to SME RD organisations, preferably in cooperation.
