The light intensification of photobioreactors is animportant building block to increase the return on investment with respect to light energy introducedvs oxygen yield in a defined volume.Previous activities have identified as a priority the need to progress on specific technologies, suchas the type of light sources and on innovative materials for light conductionand diffusion (e.g.polymers, leaking rods, specific optical fibers, lightning fabrics). This activity attempts to push theboundaries of photobioractor efficiency even further (compared to BIORAT-1) by investigating amore efficient light diffusion and as well characterization of the impact on the process and thebiomass. This activity encompasses the following tasks:- Review the state of the art for light intensified photobioreactiors and energy efficient lightguidance systems- Design a test bench with realistic operational parameters (light, flow, active species etc.)and test the most optimal configuration to achieve best possible efficiency w.r.t. volumetricoxygen and biomass production- Assess the potential biological effects of immersed light sources and possiblecountermeasures against fouling and clogging- Provide a development plan for operational hardware on ground and in space includingMAIT aspects for an operational scenario and define the scaling laws.Procurement Policy: C(2) = Activities in open competition, where a significant participation of non-LSI is requested.
