A critical aspect in the lifetime of a space vehicle is to improve the durability of the thermal protection structures, to limit the replacement of the thermal shield. Ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTC) materials, based on the Si-O-C compounds with dedicated coatings (boride, molybdenum etc.) demonstrated to be a good choice, due to their capability to resist and survive above 1500 K. To fully evaluate the response of any material in suchextreme operating conditions, it is also imperative to determine the catalysis in high temperature gas, strongly affecting the surface heat flux. Moreover, the interaction of the material coatings with dissociated gases such as oxygen and nitrogen, induces variations on the material properties. The technology to be developed is to model accurately the complex physical processes at the gas surface interface during ascent and descent, in which different coatings are experimental tested validating the predictive capabilitiesof the numerical models. The model will include advanced kinetics, using a hybrid state-to-state -Multi-Temperature (StS-MT) derived from the StS, where the vibrational degrees of freedom are described by the vibrational temperature, while electronic excited states are treated as independent species, in order to estimate the radiative properties. This activity encompasses the following tasks:- Development of a chemical model of air interacting with the Si-O-C ceramic material, in dissociation regime; - Development of a hybrid StS-MT kinetic model - Develop a database for thermodynamic properties and of transport cross sections for air including Si-O-C species - Implementation of kinetics and transport in a numerical tool for hypersonic flows for the reliable simulation, flat plate/coupons - Model chemical gas surface interaction, chemical stability, roughness, thickness, stability of coatings, catalyst by experimental plasma testing of different samples, thermal optical properties, emission spectroscopy - Numerical modelling and testing thermal bounding of the silica based substrate bounding with the coating, testing of the attachment devices - Evaluation of differentceramics suitable for the orbital entry conditions.","ecosrequired":true,"establishment":"ESTEC","firstPublicationDate":"2026-02-20T12:52:32","id":182544,"idEra":24644,"initiatingService":"TEC-MPA","ipmeasure":"N/A","isArchived":false,"isCancelled":false,"isReissued":false,"isToBeReissued":false,"issueQuarter":"261","lastUpdateTime":"2026-10-09T13:36:07","lastUpdateUser":"rhamill","openDate":"2026-10-06T15:09:03","priceRange":"> 500 KEURO","programmeReference":"Technology Developme","tanumber":"1-13301","title":"AEROTHERMODYNAMIC CHARACTERIZATION OF GAS-SURFACE INTERACTIONS FOR HYPERSONIC UPPER STAGE RECOVERY VEHICLES - EXPRO+","directorate":"Directorate of Tech, Eng.
