A number of mitigation strategies have been put forward and tested mostly on ground with a very limited demonstration in space. The Electro-Dynamic Shield (EDS) technology is a method used to mitigate the accumulation of dust on surfaces, particularly in space environments. This technology employs electric fields to repel dust particles, preventing them from settling on critical surfaces such as solar panels, sensors, and other equipment. This technology has been studied for more than twenty years outside of Europe for the mitigation of dust deposition on terrestrial and space system and it has been recently demonstrated on the Moon. In Europe, most of the studies performed so far have been on laboratory scale. Among others, an experimental EDS was successfully implemented on a number of samples including optical glass and Kapton sheets and demonstrated very high dust removal efficiency in a vacuum environment including UV, showing good potential for targeted system feasibility studies. Based on this success, the feasibility of implementing such technology on actual space hardware by breadboarding and testing critical functionalities can be addressed. This activity encompasses the following tasks: - Define the requirements for the implementation of an EDS system into relevant spacecraft structures and materials of interest with a priority towards solar arrays (with possible applicability to optical surface and other materials) and define the requirements from the target system towards EDS. - Assess the required modifications of standard designs to accommodate an EDS system, establish a list of technological gaps, define specific tests and a test plan to address the technological gaps. - Design and manufacture relevant breadboards to demonstrate EDS operational efficiency on targeted system. - Perform test for critical functionalities, including in representative laboratory environments (dusty vacuum and in presence of UV). - Based on the tests outcomes and future missions needs provide a technical roadmap with a cost outline.","ecosrequired":true,"establishment":"ESTEC","firstPublicationDate":"2026-02-13T09:50:17","id":182232,"idEra":24595,"initiatingService":"TEC-EPS","ipmeasure":"N/A","isArchived":false,"isCancelled":false,"isReissued":false,"isToBeReissued":false,"issueQuarter":"261","lastUpdateTime":"2026-09-23T12:12:00","lastUpdateUser":"rhamill","openDate":"2026-09-23T12:09:16","priceRange":"200-500 KEURO","programmeReference":"Technology Developme","tanumber":"1-13268","title":"DEVELOPMENT OF AN ELECTRO-DYNAMIC SHIELD SYSTEM FOR PLANETARY MISSIONS EXPRO+","directorate":"Directorate of Tech, Eng.
